I am eternally grateful that painting—a solitary act—has continually brought me into communion with humans I admire and adore.
It was more than a crush—it was reverence for th It was more than a crush—it was reverence for the opening of my heart, reverence for man-as-fountain: as water, as basin, as spout.

What does it mean to paint a portrait of water? Rocks and reflections only, the substance inferred. I worked again in minerals, in a very small range of tones, tuning my touch.

This painting is available for purchase directly on my website, link in bio. It is the last available mineral pigment portrait from the series.

I never intend to be an enigma, just the pages of my open book are unnumbered. @hellomr folded me into their vellum wings for issue no. 8, and provided space for free association, recall, and reticulation. Even though this was years ago, the generousness of their engagement feels as fresh and proximal as summer rain. Thank you @ryanfitzgibbon and @fransquishco for your trust, care, and curiosity.

Selection from the original 16-page feature here. I’ll post the rest to my stories over the coming days.

Hello Mr Magazine, no. 8
When you paint skin, you realize it’s as faceted When you paint skin, you realize it’s as faceted and brilliant as a diamond.

The last paintings I did—before taking a four year break from 2020-24—were portraits. I used highly translucent mineral pigments from @kremerpigmente , such as malachite, azurite, thulite, fuchsite, jade, and rock crystal, to create a sort of crystalline mist for light to bounce around in. Because of their translucency*, some areas required up to 17 layers of glazing to take on a noticeable hue.

These portraits were meditative and reverent studies, made during a time of global halting.

It saddens me that the only time we stop is when we’re forced to. I dream of an intentional, collective pause: a total rhythmic reset, the overturning of mechanical hums with natural song.

May every painting be a portal into this pace, and every pace a step deeper into realization.

*more opaque pigments helped define the darks and highlights, such as genuine cinnibar for the lips, ochres for the shadows, and shungite for the eyes

This painting is sold, but one portrait from this series is still available on my website.
We were once continuous, then cleaved by time into We were once continuous, then cleaved by time into cliffs: separate inter-faces. Now we stand as sentinels of the schism, eroding ourselves to mineralize new potential.

Reunion—collapsing into each other—would mean extinction of the world between our lines... So we frame instead of fold into the picture, we reveal instead of overwrite the space.

Time sculpts us still, softening profiles, hardening resolve. When the last grain dissolves, we’ll reunite as a new aspect, a new parallel, a new point.

The silver lining of a melting world, is the thawi The silver lining of a melting world, is the thawing of our own hearts.

Sometimes I catch myself wanting to walk away from everything. Wanting to drift like the powder that lifts off the tips of white-capped mountains.

But I’ve done that before already. It’s lonely. It’s fleeting. You rise and then get eaten by the sun, and precipitate back down, at the mercy of everything that possesses the will to run.

No. I will not trade in my wholeness for a particulate. I will not fix—or fix myself to—this landscape. I will only will myself to the vortex of the heart, the force that warms but doesn’t burn; that instils and inspires the world to take on form; that circulates, balances, and renews life constantly, continuously, holistically.

I am more vulnerable now than I have ever been. I also feel stronger now than I have ever felt before. I know this is the Love that everyone talks about, but few truly embody. I am ready to feel more, so that I can be more, for the seeds of wholeness taking root in me.

years and years and years ago I had the thought (but lacked the impression) to light all my figures from within. I wanted to invert shadows, to supplant the “cast” of an environment, with the causal effects we have on it.

Here it is, now, by older/first hands, hands that have held fire, wrists that will hinge portals.

“There is a land I can see It’s where I long to be! Where the rivers run swiftly And carry your soul to the farthest star.

There is a land that I know Where I’ve lived long ago Oh! strong comes the voice of the wild-hearted lover Who is calling to me!

He says there’s a land of the sun! Where all men may come, Oh! it’s not easy to win It can fade like the spring dew That runs through your hands.

Come with me tonight! Now the young moon is bright, You can feel the earth spinning Down pathways of starlight that dazzle your sight There is a land I can see!”

I had the idea to reproduce the edges of my paintings on canvas prints, and the results were phenomenally good. It’s a painstaking process to photograph and edit but, honestly, I can’t imagine offering any other kind of print now.

Paintings are meant to be lived with, as artifacts, companions, resonators, witnesses. This is how I can really begin to offer that. Four recent paintings are now available as Canvas Editions on my website (direct link in profile), and I will add one for every future piece.

Please let me know in the comments if there’s a specific painting you’d like to see there 🙏🤲

I’ve always felt a deep inner response to early art (pre-Renaissance) and art from outside the Western canon. It is often non-perspectival, isometric, symbolic, or inverted: it suspends my I-ness for a brief moment, until inevitably remembered.

Meanwhile, The Western canon of painting developed the rules of visual perspective to control the gaze, through uniting with it. Photos, films, games insist they are us even more, entraining with our emotions through the transference of self-identification.

“The Light Had to Witness Itself” holds space for a subjectivity that, for once, isn’t ours. The looking glass reflects only space, no face. We want to look into its eyes and be recognized, but that is not the want of this moment.

This is the world I paint from. This is the space I hold. There is no pressure here to conform to a single perspective. There is space for each of us to exist among other selves.

Shapes hold so much information, personal and universal. Every time I work out a composition, I feel internally reordered—simultaneously more full to give, and empty to receive. I hope that my paintings continue to inspire interpretations, and please know I am always always always open to them. It brings me incredible joy, truly.

I’m pretty sure I invoked a dragon.

What started as a doodle on a letter turned into this. Pretty different from anything I’ve done before, but also feels like a bridge.

Wishing everyone a magical start to this year of the Wood Dragon (aka Dragon of Blossom Rites and Lavender Flames). She only comes around every 60 years!

Some words on the process:

I used bits and pieces of old paintings to create the abstract foliage, and then digitally drew in the dragon(/Suanni). I find the textures and details extremely satisfying, and will be exploring this alongside my oil painting practice.

The Blossom Is Always There, Even Before It Breaks The Blossom Is Always There, Even Before It Breaks Through the Air
90 x 40 cm

I do not paint to capture moments, because I do not believe that moments can be kept. What differentiates the seed from the stone is the inevitability of a blooming. It is a life-code, an unchanging constant, a script that generates infinite performances and permutations. Bright, unfurling life, doesn’t end at the cutting of a stem, or the turn of a season. I have never identified with that.

For this reason, my paintings don’t have narrative hooks, though I’m open if people see that in them. I just tend to my fields of color, and hope that life chooses to take root in them.

Neutrality is not the middle between two extremes. It rules its own axis. It upholds dimensionality.

True neutrality can never be occupied or polarized, because it is the arena encompassing all sides. It is ordering, it is presencing, it is susbstantive, it is the 95% of this universe that must be, even though we can’t see.

2024 can be just another year, or it can be a portal: the difference comes in fixating on the frame, or stepping over the threshold. For you, which will it be?

I encoded all this into a painting. Title references the Gurdjieff work. Examples of symbolic geekiness below (triads, triads, and more triads!):

A mineral pigment (lapis lazuli), a synthetic pigment (pthalo), an organic pigment (indian yellow, gambodge)
Blue, yellow, and mix
Triangle, quadrangle, curve
Two false starts and a strong finish on the third ;)
